Exclusive Interview With Mrs India Finalist Ronika Rose

Please tell us briefly about yourself: your childhood, upbringing, schooling and the place where you belong?
My name is Ronika Rose Samuel. I am from the city of education – Kota, Rajasthan, where I was born and raised. My parents made sure I was instilled with the values of integrity, compassion, respect and hard work. I was always good in studies and wanted to achieve something in life. I completed my higher secondary education from Nirmala School, Kota and B. Tech from Rajasthan University. Currently I am working in Pune in a leading IT firm. Dancing is my passion. I love doing Zumba and Bollywood.

Other than your mother, who do you think is the most beautiful woman in the world?
As clichéd as it may sound, there’s an adage that says “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. I believe that beauty is a package that comprises a smart mind, healthy body and compassionate soul. For the last few months, I have been an ardent follower of Dia Mirza. She has been spreading awareness on social and environmental issues, and I think it’s a wonderful and laudable effort by her. And we already know, she was the title winner of Femina Miss India Asia Pacific 2000; so, she is an ideal example of the most beautiful woman in the world.

How did Haut Monde Mrs India Worldwide happen to you?  Did you always wish to participate in beauty pageants?
Fashion world has always fascinated me. I had done many fashion shows and dance performances during my school & college days. I always wanted to participate in beauty pageants. I found them liberating in a way that I cannot put into words. A friend of mine suggested participating in Haut Monde Mrs. India Worldwide. The auditions were in February in Mumbai just a week later, but I decided to give it a shot because I wanted to embrace each and every opportunity life offers. I am now proud to be a finalist of Haut Monde Mrs. India Worldwide. This is not just a beauty pageant but it celebrates womanhood and empowers women.

How supportive were your parents, especially your in-laws regarding your decision to participate in a beauty pageant?
I am very fortunate to be supported by a loving family. My family is my biggest strength. When I got selected as a finalist of Haut Monde Mrs India Worldwide, my parents and in-laws motivated me to accept this as a challenge. Even throughout my journey as a finalist, they helped me with a lot of things, like managing my household chores, prepping for the final round and encouraging me when I thought I couldn’t handle it any more.

Do you think marriage as an institution gives more impetus to women to chase her dreams or it bogs her down with more responsibilities?  Please share with us your experience
Indeed, marriage is a phase of life, which comes with more responsibilities and roles. It’s a bond between two families that support each other. How a woman decides to prioritize things in her life is completely her prerogative. But It’s true that, if her family and husband are supportive, they give a new impetus to her life. I am truly blessed to have such a loving family. They support me by helping me chase my dreams and sharing my responsibilities. That, according to me, is how a family should be.

Do you think married women are now more empowered than before?  If so, how and why?
Yes, I completely agree with this. Married women are more confident and empowered now. This stems mostly from the fact that women have the instinct to be more self-dependent these days. They stand up for themselves and pursue life the way it pleases them. However, they are also not the ones to take a back seat when it comes to sacrificing something for the sake of their families. Proper education, right family support and determination go a long way in empowering women.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion, for me, is anything that is trending and doable. At the same time, I’m more inclined towards my own style. I think that is very important, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I definitely do not want to look like another stub in a book, by blindly following what everyone else is doing. It’s your unique sense of style that sets you apart. And more importantly, it adds a certain comfort to your daily dressing.

In your opinion which is the one dress that can never go out of fashion?
I’m very glad I was asked this question. For me, that one ensemble that can never go out of fashion is a saree. Saree has a versatility that can hardly be matched by any other attire. It adapts to your personality and your body type. It suits every Indian woman and can never become outdated.

What beauty/fitness regime would you suggest for our readers?
I recommend a combination of physical and nutritional routine for everyone. Engage yourself in a physical activity of your choice. It could be Zumba, dancing, work out, running – anything, basically, that makes you sweat. If you’re targeting specific body areas, you should probably consult a gym instructor who can guide you properly. At the same time, it is imperative that you eat healthy. It is no secret that good diet goes a long way in ensuring that your body is free of toxins and it gets the nutrients it requires. Make fruits, green vegetables and milk are of your daily diet and you will see the difference yourself, not just in your body but your skin and energy levels as well.

Where is your favorite place to travel?
I would consider myself as a wanderlust. I live to roam. I never miss an opportunity to go out and explore the beauty that God has bestowed on earth. I feel like I owe this to the Creator. I have visited my fair share of places. Of all the places I have been to, Spain has been my favourite one so far and I would definitely like to visit it again. Spain attracts me with its pleasant weather, wonderful beaches and elegant dance forms. I could just sit on the beach watching the sea the whole day long and I absolutely love the Flamenco, which is a beautiful dance. I love Spain for the culture that it holds. Just talking about it makes me want to go back.

What is your all-time favorite movie and why?
I am not a movie buff. But I do catch a movie whenever I can. A movie that has left a deep impact on me is ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’. This movie is based on the life of the businessman Christopher /gardener. It portrays his struggles and determination to overcome the setbacks in his life while striving to give his son a good life. I couldn’t hold back my tears while watching it. The message conveyed through this film to continue working hard through your hardships still resonates through my mind. I think everyone should watch it.

Which do you prefer, Heels or Sneakers?
I am equally enthusiastic about all kinds of footwear. It depends on the attire I am wearing. Heels lend a certain grace to you. I prefer wearing heels when I am in a saree or a party dress. However, if I am to choose comfort over anything else (because, you know, all days are not the same) I would definitely wear flats with a pair of jeans a comfortable top.

Who is your favorite fashion designer?
The work of Sabyasachi Mukherjee greatly inspires me. I love his ethnic designs, particularly sarees and lehengas, and his use of Indian textiles.

Describe your sense of style in 3 words.
Comfortable, smart, well-groomed.

What is that favorite accessory that you cannot leave the house without?
Well, everyone has that one accessory that one cannot live without, right? For me, that accessory is a scarf. I absolutely cannot leave my house with it. I think that a scarf adds elegance to your outfit. I have so many of them, I’ve lost count.

Apart from fashion, I am passionate about dance and travelling. I would spend all my waking hours pursuing these, if I could.
